Industrial Design

Eindhoven University of Technology.

Hello, I am Kento Suzuki, a 1st year Industrial Design Student studying at Eindhoven University of technology. This website serves as my educational portfolio, showcasing my current journey as an industrial design student.

Past

Past

Prior to beginning my studies in Industrial Design, I had studied Mechanical Engineering for 1.5 years. Studying industrial design has allowed me to realize that it was where I belonged all along, based on my pre-university experiences. Ever since my adolescent years, I always had a passion for exploring, taking pictures and videos to document what I found. Additionally, I was always curious, taking apart technology, and also putting them together, often making custom items I use today, such as keyboards. I realized that industrial design was right for me as although I had a primary interest in how things worked, what made me stick to the things I chose to use were their design philosophy, such as aesthetics and ergonomics. Starting my studies in this major, I was initially stuck with an engineering mindset, often tackling projects immediately by rushing into creating prototypes without carefully reading through the design brief. However, as I spent more time over the quartiles, my mindset has slowly but surely shifted towards that of a designer, where I now take into careful consideration the design processes and frameworks into creating a successful project.

Present

Having spent the past 3 quartiles in Industrial Design, I have been able to transition my mindset from that of an engineer to a designer. Additionally, starting this study has also made me realize that industrial design is not just product design, especially in the aspect of including user involvement in the design process. Over the Quartiles, I have come to learn and appreciate the importance of human centered design; design is not just about creating products, but also crafting experiences for the user, understanding their needs and wants. This learning experience has led me to incorporate the importance of human needs into my vision as well. Additionally, over the past quartiles I was able to accumulate various skills, such as improving my CAD knowledge, and gaining experience in Adobe suite apps to use in my projects.Outside of university, I realize that the design process is applicable in other areas such as my hobbies. I recently started making my main hobby of restoring bikes, professionally. I now volunteer in a non-profit project, where my task is to restore unclaimed bikes. I applied my experiences in projects into these bikes, as they are projects in themselves, and I noticed that the workflow is now much more structured than when I was doing it recreationally, before I had learned about the design process and the frameworks involved. Now, I restore these bikes with focus on EAs such as creativity & aesthetics, and technology and realization.

Future

Future

My attitude towards design is a double edged sword. I am simply interested in everything, and while ambition and curiosity help to provide drive towards designing, I realize that I have myself spread thinly, and must focus on a specific area of design. I am currently interested in two squads to join, being wearable senses and new futures. These squads are relevant to me as they tie back to my interests outside my academic life. Through my experiences in the squads, I hope to be able to narrow down my focus, and hopefully be able to make what I enjoy recreationally a profession. The two squads lead to my interests in developing new materials and the integration of technology in daily life whilst retaining physical interaction. Additionally, I am also interested in the possibilities of integrating technology and new materials into “technical” clothing for outdoor exploration, as hiking is one of my main hobbies. The 3 main EAs I would like to specialize in have stayed the same since the beginning, being creativity & aesthetics, technology & realization, and user & society. These are the areas I believe that if I have expertise in, will lead me closer to becoming the designer I aspire to be, one that is able to seamlessly integrate technology into design whilst maintaining physical interaction.
