Egbert’s Journey
CBL project one was not my first group project in university, but it is for industrial design. My previous experience with projects was in my previous major of mechanical engineering, where the workflow was completely different. The inclusion of the reflective transformative design process was a fresh addition, as I had only previously worked linearly in projects. This framework has allowed me to explore the expertise area of C&A more, through the iteration and improvement of the designs I made for the project. Taking a step away to evaluate the process has caused me to work slower in comparison to the past, but has also allowed for higher quality work. Additionally, I was also able to apply skills learnt to new areas, such as prototyping. Compared to when prototyping in mechanical, the addition of the applications and practice with sketching has allowed me to become more creative with my designs, expanding on the possible opportunities before settling on one. Moreover, the ability to better visualize designs has also allowed for better communication of them as well, with ideas not being only in my head anymore. Nevertheless, teamwork was a point of improvement. With expectations not being standardized and tasks not being distributed evenly, I developed stress from taking in more than I could handle. While this has allowed me to practice and develop my skills further, I would like to put an emphasis on teamwork in future projects, as they are not individual but group based. Finally, U&S was revisited, with theoretical knowledge gained from HCD being applied to find the target group for the game, and how to build the game around them based on user research.
